I bought this because it was inexpensive and very long, giving the maximum bang for the buck. Besides a lengthy book, the plot seemed very interesting and would introduce me to something entirely new: perfumery. The details about the complexity of making unique perfumes was more than fascinating.

The whole meaning of "notes" in perfume finally makes sense and the layers of scent in a bottle require an exceptional nose for scent just as expensive wines require a trained palate.

Tessaro writes a fascinating story whose nearly pages ended far too soon. This was so soul wrenching I couldn't stop reading it, so it is over far too soon. I feel bereft having just finished it. Even though it is written such that the reader knows what Eva D'Orsey is to Grace Munroe, it doesn't matter.

I found myself wondering why Grace didn't at least wonder of this possibility for herself. Grace isn't the star of the show. The haunting life of Eva, shared in flashbacks, ought to leave you in tears as well as empathy.

Eva is a survivor. A brilliant talented beautiful child whose life is mostly awful, but likely no worse than most of the post WW1 poor in NYC.

Apparently a French orphan, how she came to be in NYC was never fully explained and I would pay quite a bit for a prequel. In this story, her gift is discovered by an unprincipled jerk, a titled Englishman disowned by his aristocratic family. When the innocent, but emotionally needy Eva, is betrayed by a woman she thought would be her savior, this corrupt expat Brit re-enters Eva's life just in time to offer a translucent offer of salvation, but at the price of a promise, an "agreement" that the essentially honest and ethical Eva accepts because she believes this "cad" will keep up his end.

He doesn't, of course. It wouldn't be a good story if the cad keeps faith. As the reader, you have to assume he will renege sometime somewhere, but how this plays out is most of the book's story and the downfall of Eva.

It is predictable that the young innocent beautiful Eva will come to a bad end, but Tessaro's brilliance as an author isn't in keeping it a surprise that Eva is "ruined", that the disowned aristocrat will use her and betray her, she writes it in such detail that the story stretches out nearly pages without ever boring the reader. She doesn't even try to keep Eva's identity and relationship to Grace a secret. The real story is that of a woman who endures emotional, and implied physical, abuse all of her very short life, but who is a survivor with unbelievable depth of character that is not noticed by most of the people in her life, who just use her in one way or another.

By the age of 16, she is no longer innocent and allows herself to be used to meet her own goals which Tessaro does hide from the reader until the very end. Eva uses her gift as well as her survival skills in a plan you wont figure out until the author reveals it. From the age of 14, her life is focused on securing one thing The flashbacks that tell her story moved me to tears more than once. The end of the story, which is Grace's coming of age, makes all of Eva's life important and her true brilliance is revealed.

Since we all face a "deathbed", I assume we all want to look back on our lives and savor the joy of knowing we made a difference.

While living a "trashy" life in the judgment of others, Eva died leaving Grace a gift without price. Just finished reading this book and loved it. Now want to read more from Kathleen Tessaro. I just wanted to keep reading it to see what would come next. A story about a young woman who loses herself to find her true identity.

Unless, as a commenter below said, maybe Eva was so concerned about discretion that she made the appointment with the attorney under Madame Hiver's name. That seems odd though considering the real Madame Hiver is indeed alive.

If this is a typo, what a huge one to make. I figured that there were enough hints early on "she likes you, it should be easy" amd then there's the drama, she leaves, and he wins the 20, francs, sends her the info re grace, and dies. And then the actress gets in the car wreck, face destroyed, goes back to mn. I get that she was the prostitute from ny, but where was the revenge?

How did Eva orchestrate it? Lea This answer contains spoilers… view spoiler [I assumed Lambert slept with her and gave her syphilis. See all 17 questions about The Perfume Collector…. Jun 23, Amy rated it it was amazing Shelves: love-stories , historical-fiction , realistic-fiction. I seriously loved this book. I only have one complaint that I will share at the end, which is a spoiler, so beware Grace, Eva, Monsieur Thissot, Mr.

Lambert, Rita, Valmont, Madame Zed, Madame Hiver, and the rest of the characters in this book are eclectic, strange, maniacal, subdued, eccentric, and at times, plain crazy.

Each one of them added to the overall character and life of this book. Add to the characters a unique and quirky story involving the smells of our lives and the life of a per I seriously loved this book.

Add to the characters a unique and quirky story involving the smells of our lives and the life of a perfumer, and you have the recipe for an amazing book. I especially love books where I can learn a little while reading.

I love books where the author has had to do her or his research into the time period, or technical issues pertaining to a book. I loved this twist of perfumes-- of how one smell or a combination of smells can take you back to a place in time, a moment, an hour, a day. I loved how this story was slowly revealed to the reader from two time periods. I felt my mind wandering ahead trying to figure out the connections, like a child's dot-to-dot picture.

Of course, I guessed how Eva was related to Grace, long before Grace figured it out, but how their lives became intertwined and how and why Eva did what she did, took more time.

I wanted to be Grace trying oysters for the first time. I wanted those bottles of perfume in front of me so I could smell the scents. Maybe this book was particularly interesting because I am living in the Middle East and I see oud shops and perfumers all over the place. They will concoct your own special blend of myrrh and frankincense and oud to burn in your home.

Maybe it is just a world that I took for granted, but I loved the whole thing!! I will think twice the next time I smell something particularly unpleasant or odd because of this book. I wanted to see Grace in a year's time. I wanted to know what she had been up to, what she had done with the family jewels, with her own life and her mind. She was not a woman to be content to sit in her lavish apartment, biding her time.

Her brain was too active for that. So, what then? Was she happy? We see the book leaning to that direction, but I really wanted an epilogue!!! I really did!!! View all 33 comments. But the worst part about this book was the absolutely horrible editing job. I have seen fewer grammatical and word usage errors in an advanced reader copy. It was distracting and infuriating.

The Perfume Collector by Kathleen Tessaro was an intriguing and compelling read with a lovely air of mystery about it that really kept me interested. I listened this this book and while I am not a fan of audio books I really enjoyed the narrator of this book as she really added greatly to the overall enjoyment of the story.

I surprised myself at how much I enjoyed this novel as I would never have picked up this book had I not come across it as a monthly group read on Goodreads. The blurb and the cover of the novel would not have drawn me to this book.

I am so glad I got the chance to read this as I really enjoyed the experience. I love the old fashioned storytelling and the intrigue and suspense created by the author and while I had guessed the outcome of the story quite early on it never took from the enjoyment of the novel.

I really got a great sense of time and place from this story and every time I put on my headphones I was transported back to s and s Paris and New York. I loved the romantic feel of this novel without the romance if that makes sense. I loved the easy flow of the story. The characters are very well written, interesting and believable. I loved the ending of the story and congratulate the author for giving the reader a chance to use their imagination.
